Overview

In this lesson students will collaboratively design and 3D print bar charts showing the population growth of 10 countries from 1972 to 2017. The lesson is spread over 3 x 1 hour sessions and involves context about the causes and effects of global population growth along with mathematical calculations, CAD design, 3D printing and demographic research. Enrolling in the lesson will give you complete access to the teacher training material and lesson documents. This includes content to help you prepare and deliver the lesson along with design tutorials so you become familiar with the process prior to teaching it in the classroom.

 

Subject Areas

The lesson can be incorporated into the study of mathematics, geography, history, or design technology and can be adapted for ages 7-15.

 

Learning Criteria

In this lesson students will:

- develop contextual knowledge about the causes of global population growth

- develop contextual knowledge about the effects of global population growth

- analyse population data and calculate percentage change between different time periods

- use Tinkercad 3D modelling software to design a 3D bar chart to relative proportions

- use 3D printers to manufacture their 3D bar chart designs

- research and explore demographics of individual countries

 

Equipment List

Each student will require:

1 x laptop/computer with mouse and internet access

1 x pen/pencil

1 x ruler

The teacher will require:

1 x large format screen

1 x 3D printer and filament

1 x laptop/computer preloaded with mouse, internet access and slicing software for your 3D printer
