Students will go on to use an instructional video to practice designing maracas in Tinkercad software, before embarking on their own creative journey to 3D model and 3D print a unique design.

Overview

In this 3 part lesson, students will design and 3D print their own maracas! By watching a teacher presentation, experimenting with demonstration models and viewing the 3D printing process, they will become familiar with the construction of maracas and learn the benefits of using a 3D printer to manufacture them. Students will go on to use an instructional video to practice designing maracas in Tinkercad software, before embarking on their own creative journey to 3D model and 3D print a unique design. Enrolling in PrintLab Classroom will give you complete access to the teacher training material and lesson documents. This includes content to help you prepare and deliver the lessons along with design tutorials so you become familiar with the process prior to teaching it in the classroom.

 

Subject Areas

The lesson can be incorporated into the study of maths, physics, music, design technology and computing. The material can be adapted for ages 9-15.

 

Learning Criteria

In this project students will:

- Develop an understanding of the history of maracas

- Understand and explore how music is created with maracas

- Determine how the design of maracas affects the frequency and amplitude

- Use CAD software to design a unique maraca

- Use advanced 3D printing techniques to make functional maracas

 

Equipment List

Each student will require:

1 x laptop/computer with mouse and internet access to use Tinkercad software

1 x pen/pencil


The teacher will require:

1 x 3D printer and PLA filament

1 x laptop/computer with mouse, internet access and slicing software for the 3D printer

1 x demonstration model (STL provided in lesson materials)

1 x small box of rice, dried beans or pebbles
